IEEE 1588 IP
Design IP
Overview

SmartDV’s IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) IP is a silicon-proven solution engineered for applications requiring precise time synchronization across distributed systems. Compliant with IEEE 1588-2008 (PTPv2) and optionally supporting IEEE 1588-2019 (PTPv2.1), it ensures nanosecond-level accuracy for networking, industrial automation, telecom, and automotive applications.

Designed for flexibility, the IP core is highly configurable to meet specific design requirements, supporting both ASIC and FPGA implementations while optimizing for area, power, and performance. Its modular architecture supports hardware timestamping, multiple clock domains, and seamless integration with Ethernet MACs, enabling accurate and reliable synchronization in complex, real-time environments.

IEEE 1588
Benefits
  • Precise Time Synchronization – Implements IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) with hardware-based timestamping for sub-microsecond accuracy across distributed systems
  • TSN-Ready Architecture – Supports PTP profiles required for TSN as per IEEE 802.1AS, ensuring deterministic timing for automotive and industrial networks
  • Configurable Clock Roles – Operates as PTP Master or Slave, adaptable to various network hierarchies
  • Flexible Delay Mechanisms – Supports both End-to-End (E2E) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) delay measurement methods for different network topologies
  • Accurate Timestamp Generation – Derives timestamps from a high-precision real-time clock to ensure consistent time alignment
  • Two-Step Message Support – Generates Follow-Up and Delay-Response messages for two-step delay mechanisms when configured as Master
  • Scalable and Extensible Design – Incorporates TLV-based message extensions and management options for custom PTP profiles and future enhancements
  • High Reliability – Offers redundancy and fault-tolerance options to maintain network synchronization under failure conditions
  • Seamless SoC Integration – Tightly integrated with SmartDV Ethernet MAC IP cores at all speeds, simplifying PTP-enabled Ethernet designs
Compliance and Compatibility
  • Fully compliant with IEEE 1588-2008 (PTPv2) and backward compatible with IEEE 1588-2002 (PTPv1)
  • Supports IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP) profile for TSN and AVB applications
  • Compatible with all major EDA synthesis, simulation, and linting flows
