Overview

SmartDV’s RS-FEC (255,239) IP is a silicon-proven, high-performance Reed-Solomon Forward Error Correction solution purpose-built for SoC designs requiring reliable, hardware-accelerated error correction across Ethernet, digital video broadcasting, optical networking, and high-speed serial interface applications. Implementing the RS(255,239) algorithm over GF(2⁸) with 8-bit symbols and 128-bit parity generation, it delivers robust multi-symbol error correction through a fully pipelined architecture optimized for the low-latency, high-throughput demands of modern high-speed SoC designs.

RS(255,239) is one of the most widely deployed Reed-Solomon codes across the communications industry, forming the basis of FEC in IEEE 802.3 Ethernet, DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-C, GPON, and WiMAX applications. SmartDV’s RS-FEC (255,239) IP gives SoC teams a production-tested, algorithmically complete implementation of this proven code covering the full pipeline from parity generation through syndrome calculation, Berlekamp’s algorithm, Chien search, and pipelined error correction, that can be integrated independently wherever RS(255,239) FEC is required.

Built for design flexibility and silicon efficiency, the IP core is highly configurable for both ASIC and FPGA implementations, with a strong focus on area optimization, power management, and peak performance. Its pipelined architecture, bit locker mechanism, and clean host interface enable fast integration and confident design bring-up across a wide range of advanced process nodes and target applications.
