SmartDV’s PCM-to-PDM Converter IP is a silicon-proven digital audio datapath solution purpose-built for SoC designs requiring high-quality conversion from standard multi-bit PCM audio samples into a 1-bit oversampled PDM bitstream for driving Class-D amplifiers and PDM-input speaker drivers across consumer, mobile, and wearable audio applications. Implementing a complete interpolation and noise-shaping delta-sigma modulator datapath, it converts linear PCM samples at standard audio sample rates into a high-quality PDM output stream with quantization noise shaped out of the audible band.
Designed as a compact, focused conversion datapath rather than a full bus interface peripheral, the IP is well suited for integration within larger audio subsystems, feeding a dedicated PDM output pin, or sitting downstream of a PCM Controller IP or audio DSP that produces standard PCM samples. It supports configurable oversampling ratio, configurable noise-shaping modulator order for audio quality versus area trade-offs, and configurable input sample rate and bit-depth to match a wide range of upstream PCM audio sources.
Built for design flexibility and silicon efficiency, the IP core is highly configurable for both ASIC and FPGA implementations, with a strong focus on area optimization, power management, and peak performance. Its parameterized interpolation and modulator architecture and clean host interface enable fast integration across a wide range of process nodes and target applications.
