Overview

SmartDV’s I2S/PDM/TDM Controller IP is a silicon-proven, fully featured multi-protocol digital audio interface solution purpose-built for SoC designs requiring flexible connectivity to a broad range of digital audio codecs, DACs, and MEMS microphones across consumer electronics, IoT, and voice-processing applications. Compliant with the Philips I2S Bus Specification (revised June 1996) and supporting industry-standard PDM (Pulse Density Modulation) microphone interfacing and TDM (Time Division Multiplexed) multi-channel audio, it delivers a single, unified audio controller covering the three most common digital audio interconnect formats used in modern embedded and mobile SoC designs.

Designed for the practical integration requirements of voice-capable and multi-channel audio SoC designs, the IP supports native PDM microphone input with configurable oversampling and decimation filtering to convert 1-bit PDM bitstreams into standard PCM samples, alongside standard I2S transmit and receive functionality and TDM support for aggregating multiple audio channels over a shared serial link. Its unified controller architecture eliminates the need for separate dedicated I2S, PDM, and TDM peripherals, giving consumer and IoT SoC teams a production-tested, area-efficient audio interface solution for microphone arrays, speaker output, and multi-codec audio subsystems.

Built for design flexibility and silicon efficiency, the IP core is highly configurable for both ASIC and FPGA implementations, with a strong focus on area optimization, power management, and peak performance. Its parameterized channel and interface architecture and clean host interface enable fast integration across a wide range of process nodes and target applications.
