AVB MAC
Design IP
Overview

SmartDV’s AVB (Audio Video Bridging) MAC IP delivers robust, time-synchronized data transmission for professional audio, video, and automotive infotainment systems. Fully compliant with IEEE 802.1 standards, including 802.1AS, 802.1Qav, and 802.1Qat, it enables reliable, low-latency, and high-throughput communication over standard Ethernet networks.

Designed for flexibility, the IP core is highly configurable to meet specific design requirements, supporting both ASIC and FPGA implementations while optimizing for area, power, and performance. It integrates seamlessly into AVB-compliant networks, supporting features like time-aware shaping, stream reservation protocols, and precise clock synchronization.

AVB MAC
Benefits
  • Time-Sensitive Networking for Real-Time Media – Supports AVB Endpoint talker and listener roles with IEEE 1722 Layer 2 transport for time-sensitive streaming
  • Precision Timing and Synchronization – Implements IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP) and IEEE 1588 with ingress/egress timestamping for accurate synchronization across devices
  • Advanced QoS and Traffic Shaping – Enables Class A, B, and C stream reservation (IEEE 802.1Qat), traffic shaping (802.1Qav), and QoS handling via 802.1Q and 802.1Qbb (PFC)
  • Flexible Network Configuration – Supports configurable Ethernet ports, rate limiting per port, VLAN tagging, and programmable IPG and preamble length
  • High-Performance MAC Capabilities – Cut-through switching, independent TX/RX MTU sizing, and configurable FIFO depths for optimized performance
