SmartDV’s PDM Controller IP is a silicon-proven, area-efficient Pulse Density Modulation interface solution purpose-built for SoC designs requiring lightweight, dedicated connectivity to MEMS microphones and PDM speaker/amplifier outputs across IoT, wearable, and voice-capture applications. Implementing native PDM bitstream input and output with a complete decimation and interpolation filter chain, it converts between 1-bit oversampled PDM bitstreams and standard multi-bit PCM audio samples without the added area and complexity of a full multi-protocol I2S/PDM/TDM controller, making it well suited to area- and power-constrained always-on voice and audio front ends.
Designed for the practical integration requirements of always-on voice-capture and wake-word SoC designs, the IP supports configurable oversampling ratio and decimation filter order for microphone input, multiple PDM microphones time-multiplexed on a shared data line with a common clock, and configurable interpolation filtering for PDM speaker and Class-D amplifier output paths. Its compact, low-power architecture makes it well suited to battery-powered wearables and always-on listening applications where a full-featured audio controller would be unnecessary area and power overhead.
Built for design flexibility and silicon efficiency, the IP core is highly configurable for both ASIC and FPGA implementations, with a strong focus on area optimization, power management, and peak performance. Its parameterized filter and channel architecture and clean host interface enable fast integration across a wide range of process nodes and target applications.
